Dr Eric Gillies BEng PhD
Dr Eric Gillies has over 20 years’ experience in modelling and measurement of a diverse range of fluid flows, and for the past 6 years has specialised in modelling river flows and sediment transport. He has consulted on several safety critical topics with industry, and has signed off several engineering assessments as a Chartered Engineer. Eric has published and presented widely in the field of fluid mechanics to both international specialist, and lay/public audiences, regulators and clients. He has managed several collaborative projects consulted widely within the industry and with academia. He also regularly guest lectures on water engineering and river restoration modelling at Universities.
Eric is an expert at using a range of public and proprietary software such as SRH-2D, TUFLOW and the MIKE software suite, and he has also written his own modelling codes and algorithms, written in the MATLAB/Python computing environment. In the field he has over 6 years’ experience, on 50+ projects, of site surveying to establish hydraulic modelling requirements, local roughness, site specific issues, sediment characteristics and structure assessment together with boundary condition modelling. He has extensive experience in using survey data, vegetation maps, sediment samples, drone ortho-imagery and hydrometry to set up hydraulic models.
As Technical Director of cbec UK, Eric manages all of cbec’s mathematical analysis, and our team of hydraulic modellers and hydrologists, as well as overseeing survey solutions and enabling technologies, and flood risk assessments. He decides on appropriate modelling strategies for all of our projects and guides model build and, as a Chartered Engineer, QC’s our technical work.
